Ronald McDonald House “Walk for Kids”

As May comes to an end here at 17th Street Dental Care we are looking forward to June and the start of summer.  When you say June in Bakersfield people think many different things from graduations, to swimming, vacations, and of course the unbearable heat.

This year at 17th Street Dental, June means the Ronald McDonald Walk. The Ronald McDonald house was opened here in Bakersfield in June of 2009 , since then it has served as a “home away from home”, for the families of NICU patients or pediatric patients whose families live to far away to drive every day to see their hospitalized loved one. They offer the everyday essentials such as showers, a quiet place to take a nap, a kitchen to cook in and a place to do laundry.

On June 2nd, our office will take part in this walk and we invite our patients and their families to join us in showing support for this foundation. Please visit our Facebook at www.facebook.com/17thSteetDentalCare there is a link to the team website with more information about the Ronald McDonald Walk, as well as information on how to join our team, or if you wish to contribute financially there is also a link to help you do so.  “Remember there is no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end.”

The Importance Oral Hygiene

Oral Hygiene the two most commonly used words in the dental office, and also some of the most important. As children we are taught that brushing and flossing are very important and that “sugar bugs”, which as adults we come to know as plaque, or bacteria are going to eat our teeth if we don’t clean them away.  We grow up visiting the dentist and getting a prize, not really valuing the importance of that regular maintenance visit. As we grow into adulthood and we experience our first dental visit without a prize, or colorful toothbrushes we begin to understand, how important this visit is.

We leave the office with a fresh feeling, our mouths clean and a new found confidence. Brushing and flossing alone are not enough to prevent cavities, toothaches and gum disease. If you think of your body as a car and your mouth is the oil, in order to prevent engine trouble which is much more time consuming, expensive and damaging to your car, you change the oil every 3,000 miles. This helps the engine run better, it keeps it cleaner and it prevents build up from accumulating.

It is just as essential to visit the office for your regular maintenance and cleaning appointments so that you keep your mouth clean and healthy. Here at 17th Street Dental Care, we have two excellent doctors, Doctor Choe and Doctor Lee, as well as a wonderful hygienist Colleen. We have convenient before and after work appointments, and are experienced in working with many insurances. We look forward to seeing you .

Deep Cleanings, Why Are They Needed?

“Why do I need a deep cleaning, or what is the difference between a regular cleaning and a deep cleaning”. These are two of the of the most commonly asked questions  here at 17th Street Dental Care, so we wanted to do a blog giving a little bit of information about the two cleanings and why they are important.  The first type of cleaning is a basic maintenance cleaning, every six months you see the hygienist, take some checkup x-rays, and get your regular cleaning. The basic preventive cleaning targets plaque, calculus, bacteria and stains on the crown of the tooth, which is above the gum line. These cleanings paired with regular brushing and flossing, prevent bacteria from going underneath the gums which causes gum disease,  tartar build up, and loss of bone.  When brushing, flossing and preventive cleanings are not done regularly, a deep cleaning becomes necessary.  The deep cleaning, not only cleans above the gums but I also cleans the root of the tooth. It goes below the gum line and it cleans, the bacteria, and calculus from the roots of the teeth, where bacteria adheres more easily because there is no enamel surface.  The deep cleaning can be paired with antibiotics, that help the gums heal, as well as three month maintenance visits to your hygienist.
